Cape Town in December: What Books Out First and When to Book

What sells out first in Cape Town from mid-December to early January, how traffic behaves, and a simple timeline for booking villas, chefs, yachts and tables.

From mid-December to early January, Cape Town is at its busiest. The first things to go are the best villas, sunset restaurant tables, New Year's Eve plans of every kind, yachts on key dates, private chefs for 24, 25 and 31 December, and transfers on the busiest arrival days. Book those as soon as your dates are firm, and keep a few days loosely planned so you can move outdoor plans around the wind.

What books out first

  • Villas with sea views, pools and enough bedrooms for a family group are often committed months ahead for the weeks around Christmas and New Year, especially on the Atlantic Seaboard.
  • Sunset tables on the Atlantic Seaboard and the best-known city and Winelands restaurants go early, and on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve many restaurants run set menus with limited sittings.
  • Private chefs are in short supply on 24, 25 and 31 December, because the same small group of good chefs is asked by everyone.
  • Yachts for sunset, and for New Year's Eve in particular, are among the first things to go, and every charter still depends on the weather on the day.
  • Transfers and chauffeurs are stretched on the weekends before Christmas and around New Year, when most visitors arrive and leave.
  • The most popular Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts can sell out well before the day, so buy tickets as soon as the programme is out.

Queues and crowds

  • The Table Mountain cableway is at its busiest from mid-December into January; online tickets give you the faster line, a Fast Track ticket skips the main queue, and the official app shows live queue times.
  • Go up early in the morning, when the queues are usually shorter and the wind is often lighter, and check the cableway's status before you leave.
  • Boulders, Cape Point and the V&A Waterfront are all busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon in the holidays.
  • Boxing Day and New Year's Day are traditionally the busiest beach days of the year.

Traffic patterns

  • Victoria Road between Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay can come close to a standstill on hot holiday afternoons, and the City has in past seasons held back private cars at entry points to the Atlantic Seaboard when it is gridlocked.
  • Chapman's Peak Drive closes at short notice for high wind, rockfalls and maintenance, so check its live status before building a day around it; Ou Kaapse Weg is the usual alternative.
  • Traffic out to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek is heavier at weekends and the estates are fuller, so plan Winelands days for weekdays where you can.
  • Allow extra time to the airport in late December, both for the roads and for busier terminals.
  • The Cape Minstrels' Tweede Nuwe Jaar parade in early January closes roads in the city centre and Green Point for most of the day; the date varies, so check City traffic notices.

A booking timeline

  • As soon as your dates are set: the villa, flights, airport transfers, New Year's Eve plans, any yacht on a key date, and private chefs for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.
  • Also early: the two or three restaurant reservations that matter most to you, especially sunset tables and Christmas lunch.
  • Two weeks out: Winelands days and tastings, Cape Point and Boulders with a driver, spa treatments and the rest of your restaurant list.
  • The week before: cableway tickets for a specific day, sunset cruise or yacht timings matched to the forecast, and a beach plan based on the wind.
  • On arrival: confirm the first few days, and keep one or two days without fixed plans.

Keeping plans flexible with the wind

  • The south-easter blows often through December and January, sometimes for several days, and it can close the cableway, cancel sailings and make exposed beaches unpleasant.
  • Put the mountain and the yacht early in your stay, so there are spare days to move them to if the wind comes up.
  • Pair each outdoor plan with a backup, such as a Winelands lunch, a gallery, a spa afternoon or a long lunch somewhere sheltered.
  • Ask about weather and rescheduling terms when you book yachts and outdoor experiences, since they vary between operators.
  • Check the forecast the evening before and decide in the morning, rather than committing a week ahead.

Having it arranged

  • Cohen Concierge arranges villas and in-home staffing, private chefs, yacht charters, restaurant reservations, transfers and chauffeurs across the Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl, V&A Waterfront and the Cape Winelands.
  • Send one message by WhatsApp, phone or the website, and they usually reply within minutes with options or the questions they need answered.
  • Every arrangement is quoted first with the full cost and any fee shown, and nothing is booked until you approve it.
