How to Get a Table at Cape Town's Best Restaurants in Summer

How bookings, deposits and cancellations work at FYN, La Colombe, Salsify and the Winelands' top tables, and what to do when they are full.

Book the most sought-after Cape Town restaurants as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for December and January. Places such as FYN, La Colombe, Salsify at the Roundhouse and Pier take bookings online or by phone, usually ask for a deposit to confirm, and have firm cancellation windows. If the date you want has gone, ask about lunch instead of dinner, join the cancellation list and keep a strong second choice ready. Here is how it works in practice.

If the date you want has gone, ask about lunch instead of dinner, join the cancellation list and keep a strong second choice ready. Here is how it works in practice.

The tables most in demand

  • FYN in the City Bowl was named Restaurant of the Year at the 2026 Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards, for cooking that applies Japanese technique to South African produce. It serves lunch and dinner from Monday to Saturday.
  • Salsify at the Roundhouse, in the historic Roundhouse above Camps Bay, was the 2025 Restaurant of the Year and still holds three Eat Out stars. It is closed on Sundays.
  • La Colombe in Constantia and its sister restaurant Pier at the V&A Waterfront both hold three Eat Out stars, and both currently offer a seasonal lunch menu alongside the longer chef's menu.
  • In the Winelands, La Petite Colombe in Franschhoek and MERTIA in Stellenbosch also hold three Eat Out stars for 2026, so they need the same early planning as the city's top rooms.

How booking works

  • Most top restaurants take bookings through their own website or an online system such as Dineplan. Some ask solo diners and larger groups to phone or email instead: FYN, for example, asks solo diners and parties of more than six to contact its reservations team.
  • Expect to pay a deposit when you book. La Colombe and Pier take it at the time of booking, and Salsify asks for a per-guest deposit within 24 hours of a provisional booking, or the booking is cancelled.
  • Read the cancellation terms before you pay. La Colombe and Pier refund in full if you cancel at least 48 hours ahead, Salsify refunds changes made at least 24 hours before, and late cancellations or no-shows usually forfeit the deposit.
  • Booking windows differ from one restaurant to the next and can change between seasons, so check each restaurant's own site for when new dates open rather than relying on an old forum post.
  • Service charges are common at this level. La Colombe, for instance, adds a discretionary service charge to the bill, so factor it in when you compare options.

Lunch, dinner and timing

  • Lunch is usually the easier booking, and in summer it is often the better experience, with daylight views and a shorter menu at several of the top restaurants.
  • Weekday tables free up more readily than Friday and Saturday nights, and an early or late sitting can open up when the prime slots have gone.
  • From mid-December to early January the city is at its busiest, so secure the dinners that matter most for those weeks first and fill the gaps with lunches.
  • Plan around the drive. Constantia is a short drive from the City Bowl, but Franschhoek is well over an hour away, so a long Winelands lunch works best with a driver.

Children, dietary needs and the small print

  • Check age policies before you book a family table. FYN welcomes guests aged 13 and older, Salsify accepts children from 12, and La Colombe and Pier do not admit children under eight.
  • Give dietary needs and allergies when you book, not on arrival. FYN says it can accommodate most dietary needs with prior notice unless they are severe or potentially fatal, and La Colombe offers vegetarian versions of its menus.
  • Many tasting-menu restaurants do not allow you to bring your own wine. La Colombe states this on its site, so plan on the wine list or a pairing.
  • Keep the confirmation and the deposit receipt together, and reply promptly if the restaurant contacts you to reconfirm.

When the table you want is full

  • Ask to go on the cancellation or waiting list, and say exactly which days and sitting times you could take. Summer plans change and tables do come back, often at short notice.
  • Try a weekday lunch, which is often still available when dinner has gone for the week.
  • Look at sister restaurants. The La Colombe group also runs Foxcroft and Little Fox in Constantia, The Waterside at the V&A Waterfront, and Protégé and Epice in Franschhoek.
  • Make a Winelands estate lunch the main event instead. A long lunch on a wine farm with the mountains behind it is a Cape Town classic and far easier to arrange at short notice than a top tasting menu.

Having it arranged

  • Cohen Concierge arranges restaurant reservations across the Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl, V&A Waterfront and Cape Winelands, as well as private chauffeurs to take you there and back.
  • Send one message by WhatsApp, phone or the website with your dates, party size and any dietary needs, and they usually reply within minutes with options or the questions they need answered.
  • Every arrangement is quoted first, with the full cost and any fee shown, and nothing is booked until you approve it.
