Cape Point and the Cape Peninsula in a Day: Route, Timing and Tips

How to plan a Cape Point day: which way round to go, Chapman's Peak status, the funicular, the Boulders penguins, a Kalk Bay lunch and the wind.

Allow a full day for Cape Point from the city, roughly eight to nine hours with stops. The classic loop runs down the Atlantic side via Hout Bay and Chapman's Peak Drive, into the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, then back along False Bay past Boulders, Simon's Town and Kalk Bay. Chapman's Peak closes at short notice and was showing closed in early October 2026, so check it on the day and be ready to use the M3 and Ou Kaapse Weg instead.

Choosing your route

  • When Chapman's Peak is open, the classic order is down the Atlantic side and back along False Bay, which puts Cape Point in the middle of the day and leaves Kalk Bay for a late lunch.
  • Going the other way, down the M3 to Muizenberg and along the False Bay coast first, gets you to Boulders before it gets busy and suits families who want the penguins while children are fresh.
  • When Chapman's Peak Drive is closed, reach the Atlantic side over Ou Kaapse Weg, which leaves the end of the M3 near Westlake, crosses Silvermine and comes down past Noordhoek towards Kommetjie, then continue via Scarborough to the park gate.
  • From the City Bowl, the drive to the Cape Point gate takes roughly an hour and a half without stops, more in holiday traffic.

Chapman's Peak and Hout Bay

  • Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road of about 9 km and 114 curves between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, cut into the cliffs above the Atlantic.
  • It closes for strong wind, heavy rain and rockfall, sometimes within minutes, and it has had long closures. A rockfall closed it in late April 2026, and the official status page still showed it closed on 9 October 2026.
  • Check the live road status on the official Chapman's Peak Drive website on the morning you travel, rather than relying on a map app, and do not plan the day around it being open.
  • Hout Bay harbour is a natural first stop for coffee, and in calm seas boats run from there to the seal colony on Duiker Island.

Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope

  • Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope both sit in the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, and a conservation fee is payable at the gate (check current rates).
  • In summer (October to March) the official Cape Point site lists the park as open from 06:00 to 18:00 and the Flying Dutchman funicular as running from 09:00 to 17:30.
  • The funicular carries you up from the car park towards the old lighthouse and the lookout points, saving the steep walk. You can still walk up if you prefer.
  • The Cape of Good Hope sign is a separate short drive from the Cape Point car park, and the coastal path between the two is a good walk when the wind allows.
  • Baboons live in the park. Never feed them, which is illegal in national parks, keep food out of sight, and keep car doors and windows closed when they are near.

Boulders and Simon's Town

  • Boulders, just beyond Simon's Town, is home to a colony of African penguins, a species listed as Critically Endangered since 2024. Boardwalks let you watch them closely without disturbing them.
  • Parking is limited in peak summer, so arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon, and bring hats and sunglasses because the wind can pick up on the beach.
  • The beach section has sheltered coves among the granite boulders where you can swim in the cool False Bay water. A conservation fee applies, and the penguins must not be touched or fed.
  • Simon's Town, the long-standing base of the South African Navy, is worth a slow walk along its main road before you head north.

Lunch, wind and timing

  • Kalk Bay is the classic late lunch, with a working harbour, fish and chips, and Harbour House, whose window tables look straight over the water. Book ahead in summer.
  • In summer the south-easter often blows hard, and Cape Point can be very windy even on a sunny day, so bring a windproof layer and hold on to hats at the lookouts.
  • Leave the city by about 08:00 to reach the park before the busiest part of the day at the lighthouse and the Cape of Good Hope sign.
  • Self-driving is straightforward, but a driver lets everyone watch the coast, enjoy a glass of wine at lunch and leave the decisions about closures and detours to someone else.

Having it arranged

  • Cohen Concierge arranges private chauffeurs and experiences, including a Cape Point day planned around the road status, the wind and your lunch booking.
  • Send one message by WhatsApp, phone or the website, and they usually reply within minutes with options or the questions they need answered.
  • Every arrangement is quoted first, with the full cost and any fee shown, and nothing is booked until you approve it.
