Table Mountain Cable Car or Hike? Best Times, Routes and Safety
When to ride the Table Mountain Cableway, how wind affects it, and an honest look at Platteklip Gorge, India Venster, Skeleton Gorge and Lion's Head.
For most visitors the cableway is the right choice: about five minutes in a rotating car, tickets bought online, and the best chance of a clear summit on a calm, cloud-free morning. Hiking up is rewarding if you are fit and properly prepared. Platteklip Gorge is the most direct route, India Venster involves scrambling with real exposure, and Skeleton Gorge climbs from Kirstenbosch. Whichever you choose, watch the wind and cloud, because both change quickly.

Riding the cableway
- Each cable car carries up to 65 people, and the floor rotates through 360 degrees on the way, so everyone gets the full view during the ride of about four to five minutes.
- Buy tickets online in advance. Standard tickets are valid for seven days, which lets you go on the clearest day, and Fast Track lets you book a timeslot to skip the queue.
- Hours lengthen in summer. On the cableway's published 2026 schedule the first car up is at 08:00 from November to January, and the last car down is at 20:00 in November and 21:00 in December and January.
- The cableway runs weather permitting and closes in strong wind or poor visibility, so check its live status on the official website or app before you leave.
- The upper station has places to eat and drink, and short paths around the edge of the plateau that suit most ages.
When to go
- Early morning is usually the best time in summer, when the air is often clearer and queues are shorter than from mid-morning onwards.
- The tablecloth of cloud can roll over the top quickly, so if the mountain is clear when you wake up, go that day rather than saving it for later in the trip.
- Sunset rides are popular in December and January, when the last car down is late. Expect busier queues in the late afternoon and take a warm layer, because it cools quickly on top once the sun drops.
- The south-easter is the most common reason for summer closures, so keep the cableway flexible and have a second plan for a windy day.
Hiking routes, honestly
- Platteklip Gorge is the most direct route up the front face, a steady climb of large rock steps that takes most fit walkers two to three hours. There is little shade, and the descent is hard on knees.
- India Venster starts near the lower cable station and includes scrambling on narrow ledges, with chains and staples on the steepest section. It is for confident, experienced hikers and is best done with a guide.
- Skeleton Gorge starts inside Kirstenbosch and climbs a forested ravine with some scrambling, then crosses the top past Maclear's Beacon. It is strenuous, can be wet and slippery, and you cannot start until the garden opens.
- Many hikers plan to ride the cableway down, but check it is running before you set out, because a wind closure can leave you walking down tired.
- Trail access can change after fires, storms or maintenance, so check Table Mountain National Park notices for closures before you go.
Staying safe on the mountain
- SANParks advises against hiking alone and recommends groups of four or more. A registered guide is the simplest way to manage this if you are a couple or travelling solo.
- Start early, choose your route and stick to it, and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Carry plenty of water, sun protection and a windproof, waterproof layer even in midsummer, and wear shoes with good grip.
- Save the Table Mountain National Park emergency number, 086 110 6417, in your phone before you set off, and keep cash, cameras and other valuables out of sight.
- Do not hike after sunset, and if you lose the path, stay together and retrace your steps rather than looking for a shortcut down.
Lion's Head as an alternative
- Lion's Head is a shorter climb with a wide view over the city, the Atlantic Seaboard and Table Mountain itself, and it is popular at sunrise and sunset.
- The top section is steep and rocky, and some of its paths have had closures in 2026, so check SANParks notices for which routes are open before you go.
- If you climb for sunset, take a head torch and come down with your group. SANParks rangers have had to help walkers stranded on Lion's Head after dark.
