Christmas in Cape Town: Lunch, Beaches and What to Expect

A summer Christmas: booking Christmas Day lunch, a private chef at the villa, carols, beach afternoons and what closes on 25 December.

Christmas in Cape Town is a high-summer day: long lunches, beach afternoons and light until about 20:00. If you want Christmas Day lunch at a restaurant or hotel, book it first, because set menus are usually published months ahead and the popular rooms fill early. Many visitors keep the day at the villa with a private chef instead, then go to the beach once the heat softens. Expect some shops to close on 25 December, and plan around the afternoon south-easter.

Christmas Day lunch

  • Restaurants and hotels that open on 25 December usually serve a fixed Christmas menu with one or two seatings around midday, rather than their normal menu.
  • Christmas menus are often released from mid-year and the well-known rooms can be full well before December, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • Expect prepayment and firm cancellation terms: some venues charge the full amount for late cancellations or no-shows, so read the terms before you confirm.
  • Raise dietary needs when you book, as some Christmas set menus cannot be adapted for vegetarian or vegan guests on the day.
  • Choose by setting: a Constantia or Winelands estate for a long garden lunch, the V&A Waterfront for harbour views and easy logistics, or the Atlantic Seaboard if you want the beach straight afterwards.

A private chef Christmas at the villa

  • A chef at the villa lets the day run at your pace: presents in the morning, lunch when everyone is ready, and nobody has to drive home.
  • December is the busiest stretch of the year for chefs and serving staff, so confirm Christmas Day as early as you can.
  • Agree the style in advance: a traditional roast with gammon, a seafood lunch built around oysters and line fish, or a braai that suits the heat.
  • Let the chef shop and prepare on 23 and 24 December, when supermarkets are at their most crowded and some suppliers start closing for the holiday.
  • Lay the table in shade or indoors: full afternoon sun is hard work in late December, and the south-easter can make an exposed terrace uncomfortable.

The beach on Christmas afternoon

  • Sunset in late December is close to 20:00, so a swim or beach walk after a long lunch still has hours of good light.
  • The south-easter often builds through summer afternoons; Clifton is usually more sheltered than Camps Bay, and Boulders Beach is protected by its granite boulders.
  • The Atlantic side stays cold even in December, while the False Bay beaches from Muizenberg to Boulders are noticeably warmer for swimming.
  • Beaches and beachfront parking are busy over the holidays, so be dropped off rather than circling Camps Bay or Clifton for a space.
  • The summer sun is strong: use a high-factor sunscreen, bring shade for children and swim only where lifeguards are on duty.

Carols and Christmas services

  • St George's Cathedral on Wale Street, the Anglican cathedral in the city centre, holds Sunday services and has hosted Christmas carol concerts in recent years; check sgcathedral.co.za for this year's Christmas times.
  • Carols at Kirstenbosch, hosted by the Rotary Club of Kirstenbosch, usually runs over several evenings in the week or so before Christmas, with picnics on the lawns.
  • Cape Point Vineyards in Noordhoek holds an annual Carols by Candlelight on its picnic lawns in mid-December, in aid of a local education charity.
  • Most parishes post Christmas Eve and Christmas morning service times in early December, so check with the church directly before you plan the day around one.

What closes, and last-minute gifts

  • Christmas Day and the Day of Goodwill on 26 December are both public holidays in South Africa, and many businesses close or keep shorter hours.
  • At the V&A Waterfront, Christmas Day trading has been left to individual shops in recent years, so some will be closed while restaurants stay busy.
  • The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has opened on Christmas Day in past years, weather permitting, and Kirstenbosch is usually open daily, but check both before setting out.
  • The Watershed at the V&A Waterfront, beside the Two Oceans Aquarium, gathers more than 150 local designers and makers, from ceramics and jewellery to textiles and homeware.
  • The Watershed is listed as open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 but has closed on Christmas Day before, so do your gift shopping by Christmas Eve and go early to beat the crowds.
  • Stock the villa, including wine and anything for the bar, by 23 December rather than queueing on Christmas Eve.

Having it arranged

  • Cohen Concierge arranges restaurant reservations, private chefs, villa stocking and private chauffeurs across the Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl, V&A Waterfront and the Cape Winelands.
  • Send one message by WhatsApp, phone or the website; they usually reply within minutes with options or the questions they need answered.
  • Every arrangement is quoted first with the full cost and any fee shown, and nothing is booked until you approve it.
