7 Day Cape Town Itinerary: One Week, Day by Day
A realistic seven-day Cape Town plan: sunsets, Table Mountain, the Peninsula and penguins, the Winelands, a boat day, a villa day and windy-day swaps.
A good week in Cape Town covers the Atlantic Seaboard, Table Mountain and the city, the Cape Peninsula and its penguins, the Winelands, a day on the water, one slow day at the villa and a final morning at Kirstenbosch or in Constantia. Keep two days flexible, because the summer south-easter decides which days suit the mountain and the boat. This is a realistic day-by-day plan, with the swaps to make when the wind blows.
Days 1 and 2: arrival, the Atlantic and the mountain
- Day 1: the drive from Cape Town International to the Atlantic Seaboard takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, so settle in, swim and keep the first evening simple.
- Day 1 evening: watch the sun go down over Camps Bay or Clifton, at around 20:00 in December and January, and dine close by so nobody drives far.
- Day 2 morning: take one of the first cable cars up Table Mountain with tickets bought online, and allow two to three hours including the queue and time on top.
- Day 2 afternoon: explore the Company's Garden and the Bo-Kaap, or visit Zeitz MOCAA at the V&A Waterfront if the day is hot.
- If you would rather hike up, check SANParks notices for trail closures first and start early to avoid the heat.
Day 3: the Cape Peninsula and the penguins
- Leave by about 08:00 and drive via the M3 to Muizenberg, then along the False Bay coast through St James and Kalk Bay to Simon's Town.
- See the penguins at Boulders early, before the crowds, then continue to Cape Point for the walk up to the old lighthouse and the views over both bays.
- Have lunch in Kalk Bay or Simon's Town on the way back, and return via Muizenberg or over Ou Kaapse Weg.
- Chapman's Peak Drive was closed in October 2026 with no confirmed reopening date, so use it only if its live status on chapmanspeakdrive.co.za shows it open.
- Allow a full day of eight to nine hours, with time for traffic on the coastal road.
Day 4: the Winelands
- Choose one valley rather than two: Stellenbosch is about 45 minutes from the city and Franschhoek about an hour and a quarter.
- Plan two or three tastings around a booked lunch, starting by 10:00 and heading home by about 17:00.
- Use a private driver or the Franschhoek Wine Tram so that everyone can taste.
- In midsummer the valleys are often much hotter than the coast, so keep vineyard walks for the morning and sit in the shade over lunch.
- Back in town, an early night is welcome before the boat day.
Days 5 and 6: on the water, then slow
- Day 5: spend it on the water with a private charter along the Atlantic Seaboard or a sunset cruise from the V&A Waterfront; mornings are usually calmer, and operators cancel when the wind is too strong.
- Day 6: keep it slow, at the villa or on a sheltered beach such as Clifton Fourth, with a private chef for lunch or dinner.
- Book the boat for the morning and keep the afternoon free, because the south-easter usually builds after lunch.
- If Day 6 is a weekend, start it at the Oranjezicht City Farm Market at the V&A Waterfront, which runs on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Day 7: Kirstenbosch or Constantia
- Kirstenbosch opens at 08:00, so walk the Tree Canopy Walkway early and have breakfast at the garden before the day warms up.
- Alternatively, spend the morning in Constantia: Groot Constantia's tasting room opens at 09:00 and the estate's restaurants make an easy lunch.
- Both are about half an hour from the airport in normal traffic, so leave generous time before an evening flight.
- If you have a late flight, keep a final lunch close to the airport side of the city rather than going back to the Atlantic Seaboard.
If the south-easter blows
- If the wind closes the Cableway on Day 2, swap Day 2 with Day 4: the Winelands are often calmer than the coast on a south-easter day.
- If the wind is up on Day 5, swap it with Day 6 and spend the windy day at the villa or in sheltered Clifton.
- If Day 3 is very windy, swap it with Day 7, because Cape Point is exposed while Kirstenbosch and Constantia are more sheltered.
- Check the wind forecast each evening and confirm the next day's plan then; Cohen Concierge is available 24/7 if you want help reworking drivers, boats and tables when you swap.
