Renting a Luxury Villa in Cape Town: What to Arrange Before You Arrive
What to sort before a Cape Town villa stay: transfers, stocking, a chef, staff, backup power, water, security, wind and which neighbourhood suits you.
The best Cape Town villa stays are arranged before you land. Time your transfer to the check-in window, have the kitchen and bar stocked, and decide early on a chef, housekeeping and childcare. Ask the agency the practical questions too: backup power, water, security, pool heating and which terraces are sheltered from the summer south-easter. Then choose the neighbourhood for how you want to live, from Clifton and Bantry Bay to Camps Bay, Llandudno or Constantia.
Arrival and the first evening
- Confirm the exact check-in time and how keys or access codes are handed over, then book the airport transfer to match, allowing for luggage and afternoon traffic.
- If you land early, ask whether early check-in is possible or plan a lunch on the way, so no one waits outside a locked gate with bags.
- Ask for the house information in advance: Wi-Fi, alarm codes, gate remotes, pool rules and who to call at night.
- Arrange an easy first supper, whether a chef for the evening or a fridge stocked with something simple, so the first night needs no planning.
- Share flight numbers with whoever is meeting you, and send a message if a flight is running early or late, so the driver can be updated.
Stocking, chef and staff
- Send a grocery and drinks list before you travel, including breakfast basics, children's favourites, water, wine and anything for dietary needs, so the house is ready when you walk in.
- Check exactly what housekeeping is included and how often, because laundry, turndown and weekend cover vary from house to house.
- A private chef can cook one dinner, a braai or breakfast every day. Book early for Christmas and New Year, when good chefs are in demand.
- For in-home childcare, ask for a vetted nanny or babysitter with references, agree hours in advance, and say whether you need help with bedtimes, beach days or evenings out.
- Mention any celebrations early, such as a birthday dinner or Christmas lunch at the house, so a chef, extra staff and table settings can be planned in.
Questions to ask the agency
- Ask about backup power. Eskom reported in 2026 that national load-shedding had not been needed since around May 2025, but it is still sensible to ask whether the villa has an inverter, batteries or a generator and what they run.
- Ask about water. Cape Town's dam levels were lower in 2026 than a year earlier and the City has been weighing restrictions, so check how the pool is kept topped up and whether any restrictions apply during your stay.
- Ask about security: the alarm and armed-response arrangements, gate and garage access, and whether staff are on site overnight.
- Ask whether the pool is heated, because evenings on the Atlantic Seaboard can be cool even in summer.
- Ask which terraces and pool areas are sheltered from the south-easter, the strong summer wind, and whether there are wind screens or a covered space for meals.
- Check parking for the number of cars you will have, and whether steep driveways or long stairs suit older guests and prams.
Choosing the neighbourhood
- Clifton: houses step down the cliffs to four sandy beaches that are well sheltered from the south-easter. Expect plenty of stairs and limited parking in season.
- Bantry Bay: on the slopes of Lion's Head between Sea Point and Clifton, largely protected from the summer south-easter, with a rocky shoreline rather than a beach and the Sea Point promenade close by.
- Camps Bay: a long beach under the Twelve Apostles and the widest choice of restaurants on the Atlantic Seaboard. It is livelier than its neighbours, and wind exposure varies from street to street, so ask about it.
- Llandudno: a small residential cove with a beautiful beach and no shops, quieter and more secluded, so you will drive for restaurants and groceries.
- Constantia: green and leafy, with larger gardens and wine estates including Groot Constantia, South Africa's oldest wine farm. You trade a sea view for space, and drive to the Atlantic beaches.
