Cape Town in January: Weather, Wind, Events and What to Book
High summer in Cape Town: January weather and wind, sea temperatures, the New Year Test and SA20 cricket, the mid-month lull and the start of harvest.
January is high summer in Cape Town: long, dry days with highs typically in the mid-20s Celsius, sunsets around 20:00 and the south-easter at its most frequent. The first week is still busy after New Year, then the city quietens once schools reopen on 13 January 2027. Expect cold Atlantic water and a warmer False Bay, Test and SA20 cricket at Newlands, and the grape harvest getting under way in the Winelands.
Weather and wind
- Expect warm, dry days with typical highs around 26°C and lows around 16°C, with hotter spells, especially inland in the Winelands.
- January is usually one of the driest months of the year, so rain rarely changes plans.
- Hot, dry and windy days also raise the risk of fires on the mountain, so follow any SANParks closures and keep to marked trails.
- The south-easter is at its most frequent around this time of year and usually builds through the afternoon, so plan beach and boat time for the morning.
- The sun sets at about 20:00 in early January and just before 19:55 by the end of the month, which leaves long evenings for eating outdoors.
Sea temperatures
- The Atlantic Seaboard beaches, from Clifton to Llandudno, are cold, often around 13°C or lower, and a few days of south-easter can make them colder still.
- False Bay is noticeably warmer: water at Muizenberg typically sits in the high teens and peaks at around 19 to 21°C in late January.
- Lifeguards patrol the busier beaches in summer, so swim at a patrolled beach and between the flags where they are set out.
- For longer swims with children, the False Bay side, including the tidal pools between Muizenberg and Simon's Town, is the more comfortable choice.
Events usually on
- Tweede Nuwe Jaar is traditionally celebrated on 2 January with the Cape Minstrel Carnival; in 2026 the main street parade took place on 5 January, so check the City of Cape Town's announcements for the date, route and road closures.
- The New Year Test between South Africa and England is scheduled at Newlands from 3 to 7 January 2027.
- The SA20 season starts on 17 January 2027, with MI Cape Town's first home games at Newlands on 20 and 22 January and more in February.
- Kirstenbosch's Summer Sunset Concerts usually run on Sunday evenings through January; check the 2026/27 line-up and book early.
The mid-month lull
- The first week of January is still peak season, and the long weekend after New Year's Day keeps beaches and roads busy.
- Public schools reopen on 13 January 2027, and from then on tables are easier to find, queues shorter and weekdays calmer.
- Many South African families head home in the days after New Year, so the roads to Cape Point, Boulders and the Winelands are noticeably easier from the second week.
- The second half of the month keeps full summer weather with fewer local holidaymakers, which makes it a very good time for Cape Point, Boulders and Winelands days.
Beach, boat and Winelands days
- Clifton's coves are the best sheltered from the south-easter on the Atlantic side, and Fourth Beach is usually the calmest for swimming.
- Book boat trips for the morning, when the wind is usually lighter, and keep a sunset cruise for a calm evening.
- The grape harvest usually gets under way in January and February, starting with fruit for Cap Classique; Boschendal began picking for its sparkling wines on 8 January 2026.
- Harvest festivals at individual estates usually fall between late January and March, so check estate calendars if you would like to join one.
- Winelands days are hot in January, so taste in the morning, lunch in the shade and drive home after the worst of the heat.
What still needs booking ahead
- Restaurant tables for the first fortnight need booking well ahead, especially weekend lunches and sunset tables on the Atlantic Seaboard.
- Tickets for the Newlands Test, SA20 matches and the Kirstenbosch concerts sell quickly, so buy them as soon as your dates are set.
- Boat charters, private chefs and drivers for the first week of January are still in peak demand, so reserve them before you travel.
- Cohen Concierge, available 24/7, can arrange all of this from one message; every arrangement is quoted first and nothing is booked until you approve it.
